In signals that a new law could be contemplated to regulate the online and information technology space, Minister of State for IT Rajeev Chandrashekhar on Wednesday said India, the global IT power, would need to evolve to a new law.
“The IT Act dates back to 2000, and was last amended in 2008. We will evolve to a new law. We are a global power in IT. There are now newer entities online we did not even think about a few months ago. So it is common sense that we would need to evolve our laws, especially in respect of user harm. I cannot say when there would be a new law but there would have to be a new law,” the MoS said at an event hosted by a private television channel.
He also said new IT Rules were meant to make intermediaries accountable to users considering the need for safety in times when even education is being delivered online.
