Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra today said the battle in Assam was not between the Congress and BJP, but between the identity of Assam and RSS ideology.
Emergency was a mistake: Rahul
New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the Emergency imposed by late PM Indira Gandhi was a mistake but was “fundamentally different from the present day scenario as the Congress did not attempt to capture the country’s institutional framework”. In conversation with former chief economic adviser Kaushik Basu, currently professor at Cornell University, Rahul said he was all for internal democracy in the Congress, which fought for India’s independence and gave the nation its Constitution. “It is an ideological battle. Here in Assam, we may not agree cent per cent with our allies on everything, but we do understand that we are fighting together to save Assam. Assam’s identity has been attacked by the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act and we pledge to bring a law to nullify the CAA if voted to power,” Vadra said in Assam today.
She also launched five guarantees during a poll programme at Tezpur, where she said the Congress would give Rs 2,000 a month to every homemaker, free power up to 200 units to all households, raise in daily wages to tea plantation workers from Rs 167 at present to Rs 365 and 25,000 government jobs. She also visited a tea estate. Vadra today wound up her two-day tour to Assam, where the Bodo People’s Front walked out of the alliance with the BJP.
The Congress is facing a tough challenge in Assam, where the BJP is accusing the grand old party of allying with the Badrudin Ajmal-led AIUDF which is viewed as a pro-illegal immigrant outfit.
The BPF’s exit from the BJP alliance could queer the pitch with the impact of this development yet to fully unfold.
