A 50-year-old man and his 18-year-old nephew died of suffocation in Rajpura town of Patiala district last night. They had lit wood fire in their bolted room before sleeping that claimed their lives.
The incident took place on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. However, the incident came to fore on Sunday morning after they were found unconscious.
The police informed that they had lit ‘angeethi’ in their room and died of suffocation in Masjid Colony, Rajpura. Two children, who were also present in the room, were found unconscious. They were rushed to a hospital for treatment.
According to the police, the deceased have been identified as Mohammad Farid (50), and his nephew Shahbaz (18). Mohammad Mazmal (4), and Momeen (16), are said to be stable.
The police said the all four hailed from Uttar Pradesh.
Surinderpal Singh, SHO, Rajpura city, said the matter came to light at around 9 am when none of the victims came out of their rented room. The house owner knocked at the door of their room several times to wake them up, but after getting no response, he broke open the lock and found them unconscious.
