9-year-old boy hit by Thar in Patiala, dies; attempts to call ambulance fail

Patiala, July 14

A nine-year-old boy, Kartik, a resident of Rori Kut Mohalla near Chhoti Nadi, was killed after being hit by a car around 9 am today. The police have registered a case against Charanjit Singh Judge of Sanour. He is yet to be arrested. The police have impounded the Thar involved in the accident.

Eyewitnesses said the boy was playing on the roadside along with other children when the “speeding” Thar hit him.

Vehicle was speeding

The vehicle was speeding; it took an abrupt turn and hit him. The boy’s head was smashed. We made various attempts to call an ambulance, but to no avail. Later, the child’s mother took him to Government Rajindra Hospital in an e-rickshaw. — A resident

A resident said the boy’s father had died a few months ago. ASI Partap Singh of the Kotwali police station, who visited the spot, said, “The accident took place around 9 am. We impounded the Thar, while the driver had fled from the spot.”

Kotwali SHO Sarabjit Singh Cheema said the child was declared brought dead at Government Rajindra Hospital. He said the case against Charanjit Singh Judge had been registered under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC.
