AAP announces human chain drive against drug in Patiala
In a significant push to eradicate drug abuse in Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party’s anti-drug initiative, Nasha Mukti Morcha, announced a human chain campaign aimed at mobilising public support against narcotics.
The announcement was made at a press conference today in Patiala by Baltej Pannu, chief spokesperson of the morcha, alongside Malwa zone coordinator and Patiala Deputy Mayor Jagdeep Singh Jagga. Pannu said: “A strong message had been sent to drug smugglers — either leave Punjab or leave the drug smuggling.”
Responding to media queries, Pannu praised the Punjab Police for its effective crackdown on drug networks, noting a significant reduction in the retail drug nexus and the arrest of major traffickers. He also criticised calls by certain political figures for the legalisation of opium cultivation, labeling such advocacy as misguided. “Drugs can never be the solution to drug addiction. We must not allow Punjab to become a land of opium and hashish,” he warned.
Recognizing the vital role of families in prevention, Pannu urged parents to educate their children on the dangers of drug exposure, especially in schools. He highlighted that following the ban on energy drinks in schools, the Health Department is now extending its focus to colleges and universities.
As part of efforts to engage the youth in constructive activities, Pannu shared the success of a pilot project in Tarn Taran where volleyball grounds were established in 83 villages. The project will now be replicated across the state. Starting May 1, awareness drives involving street plays and multimedia outreach will be rolled out in villages, towns, and cities across Punjab’s five zones.
Speaking at the event, Jagdeep Singh Jagga thanked Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Mann for their leadership, expressing optimism about the campaign’s success. “With collective effort, we can restore Punjab’s vibrant, drug-free identity,” he said.
