Patiala, February 17

Eminent Punjabi NRI and businessman Darshan Singh Dhaliwal, accompanied by his younger brothers, former minister in the SAD government Surjit Singh Rakhra and Charanjit Singh Rakhra, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi to discuss the farmers’ issues on Friday.

“We met Shah in Delhi on Friday and requested him to look into the demands of the farmers and also discussed the ways to resolve their issues,” said Surjit Singh Rakhra. “Darshan was in the US, but when he came to know about the farmers’ protests, he came to India to discuss the issue with the Home Minister,” he said.

US-based billionaire Dhaliwal who was denied entry into India because of his support to the 2020-21 farmers’ protest was later honoured with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, the highest government award for overseas Indians by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2023.

Later in June 2023, Dhaliwal was among the selective NRIs who interacted with PM Modi at the state dinner hosted by President Joe Biden at the White House.
