Outrage over the alleged rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata echoed throughout the day while OPD service remained suspended at all the government run hospitals and medical institutes during the day. Nursing students from Government Rajindra Hospital held a candlelight protest during the evening to demand justice for the victim.

Patiala-based biking group were also seen holding posters and placards around Fountain Chowk to protest against the incident and demanded that the perpetrator of the gruesome act should be punished.

The protesting nurses demanded strengthening of security around the institutions. Such incidents occur in hospitals every day, due to which doctors cannot make medico-legal reports without fear in cases of fights and quarrels.

“Are we also waiting for a Kolkata-like incidents? I am saying this because most hospitals, including Rajindra Hospital, do not have any adequate security staff at night. Due to thefts at many places, the department is also suffering financial losses,” said a protesting nursing staff member.
