City to get new Mayor today
Councillors will vote to elect the city’s new Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor tomorrow.
Front runners
The front runners for the top post are Tajinder Mehta and Kundan Gogia, regarded as Taksali leaders; Harpal Juneja, who joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) after unsuccessfully contesting the 2022 Assembly elections as SAD candidate; Gurjit Singh Sahni, who is seen as a close ally of MLA Ajitpal Singh Kohli; and Krishan Chand Buddu, who has won the MC elections for consecutive terms.
AAP in majority
Out of the 60 wards, elections were held in a total of 53 wards. The ruling AAP won 43 seats. the election on seven seats will be held later.
Factionalism in AAP
After a sweeping victory in the Municipal Corporation elections, AAP is grappling with factionalism with leaders vying for key positions in the civic body. The win, rather than fostering unity, has triggered a tug-of-war among factions led by MLA Kohli and Cabinet Minister Balbir Singh. Each group is lobbying to secure the posts for their preferred candidates.
The residents are eagerly awaiting the forming of the House so that major civic works, including road repair, resume in the city.
