National Commission for Safai Karamchari Chairman M Venkatesan held a meeting with district officials and sanitation workers here on Friday.

He directed the officials to take strict action against contractors who pay low wages and fleece sanitation workers. He added that their contracts should also be cancelled. “The problems of sanitation workers who make the country clean should be solved on a priority basis. Uniforms, timely salary, health facilities and equipment for their respective work must be provided to these workers,” he stated.

The commission chairman also interacted with the various unions of ‘Safai Sewaks’ and heard their problems. He inquired about their salary and wages and verified the same via bank messages on their phones. He urged the officials to immediately resolve their issues regarding KYC and other bank-related problems. The officials were also instructed to ensure that the ESI and EPF numbers were mentioned on their ID cards.

DC Parneet Shergill informed the chairman that the officials were working diligently to provide all government facilities to the employees of the district. “If anyone has a problem, it will be resolved immediately as per the rules,” the DC said.
