Amid the rising cases of Covid-19, Health Department today revealed that vaccinated and infected people were contracting the virus again. Reason: A new subvariant of Omicron – BA.5 – is now dominant. It can seemingly evade immunity provided by the vaccine and the Covid infection.

According to the department, a majority of fresh cases reported from the district are likely to be of the BA.5 subvariant.

A senior official of the district administration and several senior health officials, who had even received the precautionary doses, have tested positive for Covid-19.

District epidemiologist Sumeet Singh said the new variant was evading the vaccination immunity. “The new variant is causing reinfection among people who have already been exposed to Covid. Vaccinated people are showing mild symptoms after getting Covid.”
