Don’t succumb to negative influences, students told

The Punjabi University Dean of Student Welfare organised a seminar on mental health. Domain experts, including Dr Promila Batra from MD University, Rohtak, engaged with the students, discussing various behavioural issues that affect mental health. She said that everyone can maintain mental health by avoiding behaviours that may cause harm to themselves. She emphasised the need for individuals to prepare themselves in such a way that they don’t succumb to negative influences and inappropriate behaviours.

Another expert, Dr Satyan Sharma, highlighted the positive impact that maintaining relationships and connections with good people has on mental health. Referring to a study by Harvard University, he said that people who live happily in close-knit and trustworthy relationships tend to have a healthier mental state.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Arvind discussed various reasons behind the prevailing mental health issues, connecting them to the fundamental nature and history of human existence. He urged the audience to prioritise individuality and solitude in a fast-paced life and said that the root causes of a lot of mental health issues are associated with poor lifestyle choices.
