The city remembered the doyen of biomedical engineering, Vijay Goel, today.

Goel (79) was born in Patiala and graduated from Thapar College of Engineering in 1966 and later pursued postgraduate studies at IIT Roorkee and a PhD from the University of New South Wales, Sydney. He passed away on August 23.

He remained an academician at the IIT Delhi and AIIMS in 1978 before moving to the USA in 1979. There he made significant contributions in the field of biomechanics, particularly focusing on the spine and lower back pain, while working at prestigious institutions like Yale University and the University of Iowa. He eventually became the chairman and professor at the University of Toledo’s Centre of Orthopaedic Research Excellence, from where he retired last year.

His brother Avinash Goel said a prayer meeting was being organised on September 14 by his alma mater Thapar College of Engineering.
