Event organised in Patiala to mark 23 years of Punjabi Wikipedia
Upholding the belief that access to knowledge is a fundamental right, the Punjabi Wikimedians community gathered to celebrate the 23rd anniversary of Punjabi Wikipedia and strategise for its future as a leading repository of knowledge for Punjabi-speaking communities.
The commemorative event was held at Haiku Hut in Dhaulah and hosted by academician Jagdish Kaur, Head of the Dr Surjit Patar Chair at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.
Aman Arora, volunteer media incharge for the Punjabi Wikimedians group, shared details of the programme, which was led by senior Wikimedians Nitesh, Satdeep Gill, and Charan Gill. Over two dozen active Punjabi Wikimedians participated, engaging in discussions about expanding outreach and enhancing content quality across Wikimedia platforms.
To streamline future activities, Kuldeep Singh Burj Bhalaike was appointed as the group’s Coordinator for a one-year term. The community emphasized the critical need to enrich both Punjabi Wikipedia and Punjabi Wikisource by adding new books and articles and improving existing content.
Plans were also announced for a campaign to attract
new volunteers, particularly those passionate about the Punjabi language. Technical training sessions on Wikipedia and Wikisource were conducted by Nitesh, Satdeep Gill, Tamanpreet Kaur, Kuldeep Burj Bhalaike, and Harpreet Kaur. The event saw enthusiastic participation from individuals passionate about literature and the Punjabi language.
