The district police claim to have solved 27 cyber fraud cases and with the assistance of courts managed to return Rs 50 lakh to the victims. Addressing mediapersons here, Dr Ravjot Grewal, SSP, Fatehgarh Sahib, said, “Cyber fraud cases are on the rise. The police are getting maximum complaints in this regard as people due to lack of awareness share OTPs and open unknown links on cellphones and computers. Sometimes, people get lured by unknown agents and investment their hard-earned money in fraudulent schemes.”

She said, “A national-level helpline number 1930 and website —www.cybercrime.gov.in — has been launched to provide relief to cyber fraud victims. As soon as anyone realises that he/she has been defrauded, its information should be immediately shared on the helpline number or the website. Based on the information, the amount defrauded is immediately put on hold by the national portal.” She said, “Twenty-seven cyber fraud cases have been solved and cash worth Rs 50 lakh credited in accounts of victims.”

Speaking on the occasion, Rakesh Yadav, SP (Investigation), appealed to people to refrain from sharing OTPs with anyone and not open any unauthorised link on their cellphones or computers to prevent cyber fraud.

He said nowadays people were also being cheated through prank calls regarding being arrested on one charge of the other, which never happened. He urged people not to believe in advertisements that promised to double money or invest money on anyone’s advice.

While talking to mediapersons, victims Mandeep Singh and Vishal of Mandi Gobindgarh, Hardeep Kaur of Fatehgarh Sahib and others narrated how they were defrauded. They thanked the district police chief for taking immediate action and helping them in getting their money back.
