The Patiala police today arrested a notorious gangster and drug peddler following an encounter in the Urban Estate area.

The accused has been identified as Sunny Kumar, alias Taari, a resident of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Colony near the Lahori Gate police station.

Taari is facing 17 FIRs, including those under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, Excise Act, dacoity and attempt to murder. He was declared a proclaimed offender on November 25, 2022.

Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police Varun Sharma said CIA Staff incharge received a tip-off about the presence of the accused near Urban Estate and Punjabi University. Taari was riding a black colour motorcycle. A special team was formed under the supervision of Superintendent of Police GS Bains.

The police laid a trap and surrounded the accused and asked him to surrender. Cornered, Taari fired three rounds at the police team from his illegal pistol.

Bains said the police party showed utmost restraint during retaliation.

In the process, the accused was shot in the leg. He was admitted to Rajindra Hospital.

The Senior Superintendent of Police said the accused was linked to the Goldy Dhillon gang, which was involved in extortion and other criminal activities. The police have previously arrested members of the gang.

He said with Taari’s arrest, the police had managed to foil potential crime incidents from taking place in the city.

A .32 pistol, three live cartridges and a stolen motorcycle were recovered from the gangster.
