Patiala, July 23
Doctors at Government Mata Kaushalaya Hospital have successfully performed a bilateral total knee replacement surgery.
The surgery was performed on a 75-year-old resident of Sangrur.
A team of orthopaedic surgeons, led by Dr Sanjeev Arora, orthopaedic surgeon, at the hospital performed the surgery upon a 75-year-old Sangrur resident.
Dr Sanjeev Arora said bilateral knee replacement with long stem in single sitting was performed at the hospital for the first time. He added that he was assisted by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Dilmohan Singh and Anaesthetist Dr Lily, in this feat.
He said, “The patient had severe varus deformity. He was having constant knee pain and wouldn’t get up from the bed own his own.”
A varus deformity is an excessive inward angulation (medial angulation, that is, towards the body’s midline) of the distal segment of a bone or joint. The patient was able to walk within 24 hours of the surgery, informed the doctors.
Doctors finally informed that same surgery cost between Rs 3- 5 lakh in the private hospitals, however, patient had to pay only the cost of plants, here at Mata Kaushalya.
