Inter-Zonal youth festival kicks off at Punjabi University

Punjabi University’s Inter-Zonal Youth and Folk Festival commenced today. The event was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Jagdeep Singh at the main venue, Guru Tegh Bahadur Hall.

Singh, speaking at the ceremony, said, “The varsity was established with the aim of promoting Punjabi language and heritage, and these artistic events contribute significantly to this mission through varied cultural expressions.”

He added that this year’s festival was dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the martyrdom Guru Tegh Bahadur. Director of Youth Welfare Bhiminder Singh said the festival began with group Shabad/Bhajan singing based on this theme.

On the first day of the festival, competitions were also for folk orchestra, folk songs, folk instruments, classical vocal music, quiz, Punjabi folklore and cultural quiz, mime, skit, basket-weaving, embroidery, fan-making, doll and puppet-making, paranda-making, tokri-weaving, chhikku-crafting, pidhi (small stool) weaving and others.
