Jamia violence: Students protest over police action

Students of Punjabi University, Patiala, today held a protest to show solidarity with students of Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi, who got injured in police action on Sunday.

Slogans of unity rent the air

  • Over 300 students gathered on the campus and raised slogans of unity in the country with outcry ‘Sabhi ka khoon hai shamil yahan ki mitti mein…’ They protested against NRC and implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act.

  • The students demanded that cases registered against students should be cancelled and strict action should be initiated against police personnel involved in attacking the students.

Lambasting the police action against the students protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act, students associated with Punjab Radical Students Union (PRSU), Punjab Student Union (PSU) and other student associations took to the streets on the campus with placards, posters and carried out a protest rally.

Over 300 students gathered on the campus and raised slogans of unity in the country with outcry ‘Sabhi ka khoon hai shamil yahan ki mitti mein…’ They protested against NRC and implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act.

Sandeep Kaur of the PRSU said, “Students of Jamia Millia islamia University have been holding peaceful protest against the Central Government’s decision of passing the Citizenship Amendment Act. But the police lathi-charge and use of tear gas against them is condemnable. The police personnel entered the university library, hostels and threw tear gas shells that left over 100 injured.”

Over 100 Jamia Millia Islamia students got injured in the police action. We condemn the use of force against students.

Other student organisations part of the protest, included Democratic Students’ Union (DSO), All India Students’ Federation (AISF), Students’ Federation of India (SFI), All India Research Scholars Association (AIRSA) and among others.
