Students of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) and the university alumni today expressed solidarity with the students of Jamia Millia Islamia University who were lathi-charged during a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on Sunday in Delhi.

As many as 263 students and university alumni condemned the police action and said, “We write this today to vociferously abhor the abuse and brutality with which the Delhi Police has sought to violate the right of students to peacefully protest and express their disapproval of the CAA.”

Voicing concern over the implementation of the act, they said the CAA would cause immense harm to the secular aspect of India. “Citizenship and refuge in India should never be based upon religion, but rather upon legitimate grounds recognised internationally. The CAA, along with the National Register for Citizenship, will lead to loss of the constitutional right of dignity and equal protection of law.
