Patiala feeder canal gets 24-km paved section, farmers to benefit
Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal inaugurated the 24-km paved section (lining and rehabilitation) of the second Patiala feeder canal on Friday. The project is being tipped to benefit farmers in the Patiala, Sangrur, Mansa and Malerkotla districts. Completed in just one-and-a-half months, the project has been executed at a cost of Rs 36 crore.
During the inauguration, the minister stated that with the completion of the project, approximately 400,000 acres of land across ten blocks in the Patiala, Sangrur, Malerkotla, and Mansa districts will now receive 1,617 cusecs of water, an increase from the previous 900 cusecs. He highlighted that the work, originally estimated to cost Rs 42 crore, was completed using Rs 36 crore.
“Utilising canal water helps raise groundwater levels, and farmers are encouraged to use it, as it produces healthier crops and reduces electricity consumption,” he added.
