Patiala locals come together to mark World Environment Day

The city came together to mark the World Environment Day with enthusiasm, In villages across the district’s 10 blocks, planting drives were carried out around the Sanjha Jal Talabs.

The event witnessed community participation, including men and women from local communities, NGOs, panches, sarpanches, and block-level staff of the District Administration, said Deputy Commissioner (DC) Preeti Yadav.

The residents were also sensitised about the importance of adopting a clean and sustainable lifestyle in line with the Swachh Bharat mission.

Punjabi University Vice Chancellor Jagdeep Singh, meanwhile, also planted a sapling at the SS Bir Botanical Garden on campus. He also toured the garden and appreciated the Department of Botany for its maintenance.

Students of the Senior Secondary Model School, Punjabi University, led by Principal Satbir Singh Gill and other staff present also planted saplings to mark the occassion.

School in-charge said gradual deterioration of the environment was a very serious problem and needs prompt addressing.

Ravee Singh Ahluwalia, CEO of Patiala Foundation, meanwhile, presented key environmental initiatives undertaken by the organisation to Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The presentation took place during an event organised under the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan by Punjab Agricultural U’iversity’s and Krishi Vigyan Kendra Patiala campus.

He briefed the minister about the flagship initiative Project PRITHVI, which focuses on sustainable environmental solutions. Under the project’s second phase, the Foundation is actively installing Dry Leaf Composters in both individual households and community spaces.
