Patiala, February 5

A six-day cleanliness initiative kickstarted in the city today. Babandeep Singh Walia, Joint Commissioner of the Patiala Municipal Corporation, launched the campaign, which would end on February 10. The aim of this initiative is to elevate the aesthetic appeal and cleanliness standards of the city.

The Municipal Corporation has appealed to the residents’ welfare associations, social organisations, and volunteers to actively participate in this campaign to make it impactful.

Key takeaways

  • The state government has banned the use of single-use plastics, such as polythene bags, cups, plates, spoons, straws, and Styrofoam.
  • Heavy fines will be imposed on those found buying, selling, storing, or using these products and legal action is possible
  • Single-use plastic is not only harmful to the environment but also poses severe health risks

On the first day, a cleanliness drive was carried out from Rajpura Bypass to Sirhind Road, covering approximately 1.5 kilometres. The areas around shops were cleaned and street vendors were instructed to use dustbins. The community facilitator from the Municipal Corporation Patiala, Jwala Singh, social worker Daljit Singh and sanitation workers participated in the initiative.

Area Sanitary Inspector Rishabh Gupta said the state government has banned the use of single-use plastics, such as polythene bags, cups, plates, spoons, straws, and Styrofoam. Heavy fines would be imposed on those found buying, selling, storing, or using these products and legal action could also be taken against them.

He emphasised that the use of single-use plastic is not only harmful to the environment but also poses severe health risks. The ingestion of plastic by animals harms their health, and is also detrimental to flora and fauna.

Amandeep Sehkon, an expert on plastic management, stated plastic waste should be handed over only to waste collectors for proper recycling.

Plastic collected during the cleanliness drive today was sent to the Focal Point MRAF centre by the Patiala Municipal Corporation for recycling.
