Patiala, January 18

The Patiala Municipal Corporation (MC) has undertaken a cleanliness drive under the Swachh Teerth initiative. Under the initiative, focus is being laid on cleaning various religious places and adjoining colonies across the city to make them free of plastic waste. Roads, streets and other open spaces were cleaned, and plastic waste was collected by sanitation workers and sent to Material Recovery Facility (MRF) centres.

Patiala MC Joint Commissioner Babandeep Singh said the main objectives of the initiative are to discourage the use of single-use plastic, preparing manure within the boundaries of households from segregated kitchen waste, and collecting plastic waste from open areas and managing it in MRF centres.

He appealed the city residents to stop using single-use plastic as it is highly hazardous for health and the environment, and added that all-round efforts should be made to keep neighbourhoods clean. Additionally, during gatherings, the use of single-use plastic items such as plastic cups, plates and glasses should be avoided. Instead, steel utensils should be used, he said.
