Tensions flared in Jahlan village here on Wednesday as police moved in to remove alleged illegal encroachments on a disputed land.

Farmer unions accused the authorities of trying to hand over the land to a “selected few,” sparking protests.

Meanwhile, police used mild lathicharge to disperse farmers, with claims emerging that women and elderly were also targeted.

Over 25 villagers, including several women activists, have been detained, according to farmer groups.

The BKU has strongly condemned the police action.
