Fatehgarh Sahib, August 4

The District Patwar and Kanungo Union held a protest in front of the District Administrative Complex against abolishing 1,056 posts of patwari by the Punjab Government. The protesters burnt copies of letters issued in this regard and raised slogans against the government.

Addressing the media district president of the Kanungo Association Sukhwinder Singh and district president of the Revenue Patwar Union Princejit Singh said, “The Punjab Government has reduced posts of patwari from 4,716 to 3,660. In Fatehgarh Sahib district 26 posts of patwari have been abolished. Now, there will be 92 posts against 118.”

“It is unfortunate that instead of increasing posts of patwari keeping in view the work load, the government has decreased posts. This will increase burden on patwaris, who are busy in implementing new schemes of the state government. It will not be possible to work in such circumstances,” they said.

They warned the government to immediately withdraw orders regarding abolishing the posts of patwari otherwise, a decision to intensify the struggle would be taken at the meeting of the state body soon, they said.

Mohan Singh Bhedpura, the state representative of the All-India Kanungo Association, said, “There are only 1,700 patwaris. Three thousand posts lying vacant. The AAP government has rehired 400 patwaris to tide over the crisis recently. Approximately, in 2,200 patwar circles the entire revenue-related work has come to standstill from the last three months.”
