Punjabi University researcher develops real-time air quality index detector to instantly check air purity
A design patent device for a cutting-edge real-time air quality index (AQI) detector has been designed by a Punjabi University scholar and the device will be able to instantly measure the level of air purity in indoor places like classrooms, hospitals, offices and shopping malls.
Punjabi University on Sunday claimed the successful registration of its design patent.
It has been developed by PhD scholar Bachandeep Bhathal at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering under the guidance of Gaurav Gupta and Brahmaleen Sidhu. Gurjit Bhattal and Priyanka Gupta have also contributed to the research.
Bachandeep Bhattal said the patented device offers a compact, user-friendly solution for monitoring air quality in indoor environments, such as classrooms, hospitals, offices, shopping malls, party halls, theatres and homes.
Gaurav Gupta said the benefit of this feature of the device is that by knowing the air quality at any place immediately, efforts can be made to improve it or devise an alternative method. With indoor air pollution becoming a growing concern in Punjab due to dust, biomass smoke, and inadequate ventilation, this innovation arrives at a critical time. The device has the potential to significantly improve public health outcomes by reducing exposure to harmful air pollutants within indoor settings.
Brahmleen Sidhu said that unlike conventional AQI systems focused on outdoor monitoring, this device is specifically designed to operate in enclosed spaces. It continuously tracks and displays real-time air quality metrics, enabling timely interventions such as ventilation or use of purifiers. The design ensures portability, aesthetic integration with indoor spaces, and accessibility for daily use.
Vice Chancellor Jagdeep Singh congratulated Bachandeep Bhattal and the team saying any institution conducting researches that prove to be helpful in making the standard of living for the common people simpler and better testifies to the ability of that institution as well as its priorities.
