Patiala, December 27

Work has started on the Qila Mubarak heritage street project to be completed at a cost of Rs 42 crore. The project will be jointly executed by the Public Works Department (B and R) and the Sewerage Board.

Recognised as a monument of national importance and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, the government is set to establish a heritage street on the periphery of the Qila Mubarak. The project, which started in December, is expected to be completed within 24 months. Officials said the renovation of the over 270-year-old fort was going on and was expected to be completed soon.

The heritage street begins from Dal Dalia Chowk, passes through Chhatta Nanumal and stretches till Bartan Bazaar connecting the Qila Mubarak.

“All electricity wires will run underground while the water supply and sewerage lines will be re-installed so that there is no need to replace them in next 50 years,” said an official. The drainage system of the area will also be re-worked while new tiles will be laid on the whole carpet area of the street. Also, heritage lights and new seating areas will be built near the Shahi-Samadan.

Coordinator of the committee formed for the project Mayor Sanjeev Kumar Sharma said: “The work has started and the PDA’s Chief Administrator Surabhi Malik is the convener. The road works, beautification of the façade of buildings and other works will be carried out as part of the project.
