One hour of heavy rain on Wednesday afternoon threw life out of gear in Zirakpur and surrounding areas. “It takes only one hour of rain to expose the lack of basic infrastructure here,” said Bhavna Arora, a Maya Gardens resident. While there was chaos on city roads, shops wore a deserted look as customers preferred to stay inside their homes.

Notably, the Baltana bridge was overflowing with garbage and horticultural waste a day prior. Street lights on main roads have also remained non-functional for the past many days.

Manholes in the area are also missing and sewers are overflowing, with the sewage lines and stormwater drains being rendered ineffective.

Ex-MLA slams ‘systemic breakdown’

Former Dera Bassi MLA NK Sharma said, slamming the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government today for a “systemic breakdown” as the city continued to reel under severe waterlogging till late in the evening.

He further said the internal roads are littered with potholes in Zirakpur the National Highways have turned into streams this monsoon season.

Criticising the alleged apathy from the Zirakpur Municipal Council and the local MLS Kuljit Singh Randhawa is missing, Sharma said there has been a complete breakdown in the basic infrastructure of the city

“Despite this, the current government and legislators are only misleading people with false propaganda,” he alleged after listening to the residents woes’ in Balaji Homes, Stella Homes and Pink City in Peemuchhalla today.

The former Shiromani Akali Dal MLA said the AAP government, local MLA are misleading the people by making false claims in the name of development.

“The infrastructure has not been developed in Zirakpur according to the population. Only hollow promises are being made in the name of grid for power supply, tube wells for drinking water, and health facilities,” he claimed.
