Setting dry leaves and waste on fire has become a perennial problem in the city. Residents of areas such as SST Nagar, Officer Colony, Baradari Market, Ajit Nagar, Hira Nagar, and Sular Road have been raising concerns over the recurring issue of dry leaves and garbage being set on fire, exacerbating health hazards in the locality.

Advocate Divanshi, a resident of Officer Colony, highlighted the distress caused by the practice, particularly among the elderly and children, especially those suffering from bronchitis, asthma, or other respiratory diseases. She said after a couple of days, sweepers in the area often resort to burning waste and dry leaves, leading to significant air pollution, adding that the resultant smoke and fumes not only contribute to environmental degradation but also pose serious health risks to the community.

Residents have been urging local authorities to address the issue promptly by implementing effective waste management practices and enforcing regulations against the open burning of waste. They have been demanding the authorities devise alternative methods of waste disposal that do not compromise public health or environmental well-being.

In response to these concerns, the municipal authorities have assured residents of swift action. Officials said plans are underway to intensify awareness campaigns regarding the harmful effects of open burning and to implement stricter enforcement measures to curb the practice.
