The Punjab Academy of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology (PAFMAT), a state body of forensic medicine and medicolegal experts, has urged the Health and Family Welfare Department to start post-mortem examination at Mata Kaushalya Hospital, Patiala.

The association said Mata Kaushalya Hospital, which was a designated district hospital, had not yet started the post-mortem work despite the availability of the required infrastructure, mortuary and doctors, thus putting an extra burden on Government Medical College (GMC), Patiala.

Dr DS Bhullar, president of the academy, said the GMC was a tertiary-level hospital and supposed to deal with its own cases or the referred cases that required intervention of forensic medicine experts.

The association said there was an urgent need to divide and share the post-mortem work with Mata Kaushalya Hospital for speedy disposal of cases and timely cremation of bodies.
