Traffic police tighten noose on schoolbuses flouting norms

Under a special campaign related to traffic and road safety, special checkpoints were set up at various points in the district, and school vehicles found violating the rules were issued challans. During the check, all the drivers were instructed to keep all their documents complete. The police said there have been complaints against school buses not following the norms, including overloading and overspeeding.

Additionally, it was emphasised during the traffic check that no one should allow children under the age of 18 to operate two- or four-wheeled vehicles. The police said the underage drivers and vehicle owner face action under Sections 199-A and 199-B of the Motor Vehicle Act (Amendment 2019) from July 31, 2024, which includes penalties against the parents of the underage child.

The police said the penalties could include up to three years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25,000. Similarly, if any underage child borrows and drives a two- or four-wheeled vehicle from someone else, action would be taken against the vehicle owner as well.
