Urban forests to come up in 3.5 acre near Focal Point

Work on the two Miyawaki forests near the MC’s material recovery facility commences on Monday.

The Municipal Corporation is working on developing two mini Miyawaki forests in Patiala Focal Point near the material recovery facility centre.

Miyawakis forests are urban forests created using a disticnt afforestation technique developed by the namesake botanist Akira Miyawaki from Japan.

The planned forest would house around 35,000 plants, with 10,000 plants per acre spanning 45 varieties of native species and fruits in an area spread across 3.5 acre.

The work on the project officially began today done under the supervision of Municipal Corporation Superintendent Engineer SE Gurpreet Singh Walia.

The said forests is being developed in cooperation with Vardhman Special Steels Limited in Association under the Corporate Social Responsibility initiative project Prakriti

It will be executed within period of three months by plantation team of Ecosikh. Amit Dhawan senior manager of Vardhman steels said that this is the Eighth Miyawaki forest in Punjab after Ludhiana and Amritsar and their company is committed to develop total 1000 Acres of forest land in Punjab.

Under the initiative Vardhman Special Steels Limited shall maintain the forest for period of three years before handing it over to the civic body.
