Patiala, December 13

The decision of Punjabi University’s Examination Department to hold semester exams during the period marked for winter break has received flak from teachers.

Faculty members associated with a number of associations today said they have discussed the delay in holding exams with the Vice-Chancellor (VC) and Dean, Academics and demanded no changes be brought in the university’s academic calendar.

As per the university’s calendar, examinations for the odd semester that came to an end in November were supposed to be held from November 27 to December 20 followed by a winter break from December 23 to January 3.

However, the Examination Department has decided to continue holding examinations in late December and early January leading to rescheduling of the winter break.

Dr Jaswinder Singh Brar, president, PUTA, today said, “There should be no change in the schedule of the winter break and examinations should also not be held in break period.”

Dr Barjinder Singh Tohra, president, Government College Teachers’ Association, who met the VC said, “While the current academic session came to an end in November, the exams of some courses will begin about a month after the end of session from December 17.

Meanwhile, Dr Balwinder Singh Tiwana, Controller of Examinations, said, “We have started an online system and there were some issues which we are working on. We are sure the online system will be fruitful in holding timely exams from the next semester. We might also compensate for the winter break.”
