THE Air India plane crash near the Ahmedabad airport has come as a shocker for the whole nation. It is a big setback to civil aviation, which is among the fastest-growing sectors in the Indian economy. India also figures among the world’s leading aviation markets. Ironically, it was only two months ago that the state-of-the-art Digital Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder Laboratory was inaugurated at the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) in New Delhi. The Rs 9-crore facility, described by the Central Government as a “significant stride towards enhancing aviation safety”, is aimed at improving the mechanism to identify the causes of accidents and ensuring accountability.
