Delivery, not drama, must define Winter Session
The Tribune Editorial: Transparency on SIR, accommodation of dissent and space for searching questions are essential to maintaining parliamentary credibility
THE Winter Session of Parliament has opened with Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the Opposition to “deliver, not do drama.” It is a sharp but unmistakable message that sets the tone for what should be a compact yet consequential 19 days. With just 15 sittings, the session was always expected to be high-pressure. Yet Day 1 has already seen adjournments over the contentious Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, signalling another season of noisy confrontations rather than constructive debate. The Prime Minister has framed the moment as an opportunity for national purpose. His call for a serious, delivery-oriented session comes as the government prepares to push an ambitious legislative agenda that ranges from long-pending economic reforms and tax amendments to health security and excise proposals. The first set of Bills tabled, including amendments to GST frameworks and health-sector regulation, reflect this intent.
