Digital arrests: SC is right in calling for utmost attention

THE Supreme Court's proposal to task the Central Bureau of Investigation with probing the menace of digital arrests points to the magnitude of the crime, the nature of its execution and the apparent inability to effectively deal with it. In seeking countrywide details of the scams orchestrated by fraudsters posing as judges and police officers, the apex court has also signalled the need for utmost attention in formulating strategies to take on the crime syndicates. Its observation of a clear pattern of targeting of senior citizens rings a familiar bell. Instances of digital arrest and cyber fraud have become so commonplace that every user of a digital device lives with a constant sense of fear and anxiety. A new scam surfaces practically every day. It's a dire situation. When the foundation of public trust starts eroding, at stake is the rule of law.
