THE death of three patients at the Jalandhar Civil Hospital, allegedly due to a technical fault that disrupted oxygen supply, has exposed gaps in the management of this life-saving gas — and that too at one of Punjab’s busiest public health institutions. Though the hospital authorities have claimed that the fault was promptly rectified and back-up oxygen cylinders were made functional, it’s apparent that there was some delay that proved fatal for the patients on ventilator support. Every minute counts in emergency cases, and even a small lapse can have irreversible consequences.
