IMPROVED seeds, specifically of high yielding varieties (HYVs) of wheat and rice, were the core component of the agricultural transformation in the 1960s, effecting a more than two-fold increase in the productivity and production of foodgrains. During the same period, hybrid seeds of crops like maize and jowar were also introduced. The National Seed Corporation was established in 1963 to produce and distribute seeds of HYVs to fulfil the demand of F1 hybrid seeds possessing heterotic vigour, which is basic to harnessing the full advantage of hybridisation.
