A national shame — that’s how the Supreme Court has described the unending ordeal of acid attack survivor Shaheen Malik, whose case has been pending since 2009. Terming tardy trials in acid attack cases “a mockery of the system”, the SC has directed all high courts to submit details of pending cases within four weeks. The apex court has also asked the Centre to consider amending the law so that the survivors — mostly women — are covered under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act and can access various welfare schemes. This valuable suggestion, if implemented, can go a long way in helping the victims rebuild their lives.
