Tariff overload: Indian economy’s resilience faces acid test
IT’s the beginning of a long haul for India as the additional 25 per cent tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump has come into effect. The total burden of levies on New Delhi has shot up to 50 per cent, with Trump punishing New Delhi for defiantly buying Russian oil. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has put a brave face on the dire situation, raising the pitch for Swadeshi & Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India and ruling out any compromise on the interests of farmers and small-scale industries. Despite his tough talk, it is feared that the new tariff will hit labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, gems & jewellery and leather, imperilling the livelihoods of lakhs of Indians.
