1 dead, 18 hurt in roof collapse
One person was killed and 18 others, including women and children, were injured when the roof at the residence of Harbhajan Singh Lovely of Sabhra village collapsed on Sunday. The bhog ceremony of Sehaj Path was being performed when the incident occurred.
Lovely was reportedly blessed with a son. He had invited villagers and his relatives for the Sehaj Path at his home. Patti DSP Kanwalpreet Singh said the deceased was identified as Gurpreet Singh (34) of Harike.
A ragi jatha was performing kirtan on the rooftop with a large number of people in attendance, while langar was being prepared in the room below with many people sitting there.
Suddenly the roof collapsed and people got trapped in the debris. Villagers launched the rescue operation. Saving the Guru Granth Sahib was their top priority. Patti Civil Hospital SMO Dr Ashish Gupta sent five ambulances to ferry the injured to nearby hospitals. Gurpreet Singh was declared dead by the doctors.
The injured were identified as Minnu Kaur, Ravinder Kaur, Nirmaljit Kaur, Harmandeep Kaur, Gurmeet Kaur of Patti, Harpinder Singh, Gurmeet Kaur of Rajasansi, Dilbag Singh Barwala, Jetinder Singh, Manjit Kaur of Zira, Baljit Kaur, Charanjit Kaur, Mandeep Kaur, Rajwinder Kaur, Harpreet Kaur, Bhajan Singh, Jughar Singh and Shingara Singh. They were said to be out of danger.
