108-foot National Flag unfurled to honour 1971 War heroes
On Saturday, the National Flag was unfurled on a monumental 108-foot High Mast at Laungewala Yudh Sthal, paying tribute to the bravery and valour of Indian soldiers during the 1971 War. The installation of the flag was made possible through the joint efforts of the Indian Army and the Flag Foundation of India.
The event was attended by war veterans Naik Jagdev Singh and Hav Mukhtiar Singh from 23 PUNJAB, who fought in the Battle of Laungewala 53 years ago, along with eight other veterans from Jaisalmer district.
The occasion was marked by a cultural programme featuring patriotic songs performed by school students. Their performances added vibrancy to the event, honouring the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers.
The Battle of Laungewala, fought in December 1971, stands as a symbol of the valour and sacrifice of India’s Armed Forces. The sacred ground of Laungewala serves as a reminder of the fierce battle fought here between December 5 and 7, 1971, where the courage of a few Indian soldiers triumphed over a much larger enemy force. The War Memorial at Laungewala has since become a prominent tourist destination, attracting thousands of visitors who come to pay their respects to the fallen soldiers.
During his visit on November 14, 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the importance of preserving this legacy and developing the site as a place of national pride. Since then, under the efforts of the Indian Army, Laungewala Yudh Sthal has undergone significant transformation. The installation of the 108-foot-high National Flag is a key part of this transformation.
Those present at the event noted that the towering flag would inspire all who visit Laungewala, serving as a powerful reminder of India’s rich legacy of heroism and patriotism. It stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Indian Army and its unwavering commitment to the nation. — OC, December 7
