110-year-old heritage gate restored to former glory in Sunam 

A 110-year-old heritage gate adjoining the railway station, once the crowning symbol of Sunam town, has been finally restored to its original splendour.

Cabinet Minister Aman Arora formally inaugurated the gate on Wednesday night after it underwent a comprehensive restoration at a cost of Rs 36 lakh.

Arora described Sunam as a city steeped in heritage, with a proud and ancient past that had suffered prolonged neglect.

“This neglect had left many historic structures, including the gate, in perilous condition, posing a direct risk to adjacent shops and vendors. This town is famous for the great freedom fighter Shaheed Udham Singh. It is possible that Udham Singh ji may have once passed through this gate after alighting from the adjacent railway station. Therefore, it is our responsibility to preserve such historical places. This gate stands as a fine example of the Phulkian Misl’s Qila Mubarak architectural style. Past governments, however, consistently overlooked such treasures,” said Arora.

He added, “Heritage buildings are like our elders. Just as we care for our seniors, we must preserve these monuments.”

Sources said Arora had assured locals of this gate’s restoration just after the formation of the AAP’s government.

Traditional lime-based masonry was used to ensure its authenticity. Arora said the gate’s restored elegance and grandeur would now remain intact for the next 150 years.
