The state has reported 151 confirmed cases of dengue and 11,857 suspected cases as of Friday. Twenty-five cases of Chikungunya have also been reported from across the state with 16 cases reported in Amritsar alone.
In response, the government has stepped up efforts to combat the mosquito-borne disease, leading a door-to-door awareness and inspection campaign in Patiala.
The campaign, “Har Shukarvaar, Dengue Te Vaar”, aims at mobilising people in identifying and eliminating mosquito breeding grounds.
On Friday, Health and Family Welfare Minister Balbir Singh visited several neighbourhoods in Patiala, including Ranjit Nagar and Dashmesh Nagar. During the inspections, mosquito larvae were discovered in water-filled bowls placed for birds and stray animals.
The minister personally visited houses and surrounding areas “Vacant plots and car washing centres are emerging as new hotspots for mosquito breeding,” he said. “While fumigation helps, the real weapon against dengue is public awareness and active participation,” he added.
The district-wise breakdown of confirmed cases shows Kapurthala at the top with 26 cases, followed by SAS Nagar (24), Faridkot (18), Tarn Taran (17), Amritsar (12) and Hoshiarpur (12).
