2 nabbed for cross-border espionage by Malerkotla police

31-yr-old widow served as local handler, while Pak embassy official transferred info to handlers in his country

The police here have claimed to have dismantled a cross-border espionage network by apprehending two persons, including a 31-year-old widow.

A Pakistani national posted at the Pakistan embassy in New Delhi has been booked in the case.

The network was dismantled on the basis of secret information received by the Malerkotla police, led by SSP Gagan Ajit Singh, amid the war-like situation when the agreement to ceasefire was yet to be implemented by the Indian and Pakistan governments.

The nabbed persons have been identified as Gujala of Chor Mohalla in Malerkotla, presently staying with her father at Mohalla Bhaurian Wala inside Delhi Gate, Malerkotla, and Yameen Mohammad of Malerkotla.

Both accused have been arrested after being booked under Section 152 of BNS and Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Official Secret Act for allegedly endangering India’s sovereignty, unity and integrity.

The police have seized two mobiles from them used in the crime.

A perusal of records revealed that the City 2 police, led by Yadwinder Singh, had registered an FIR against Gujala of Malerkotla and Yameen Mohammad, besides their Pakistani accomplice, an official of the Pakistan embassy in New Delhi, on the basis of secret information on Thursday.

The accused were apprehended from different places on Saturday.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the Pakistani national had lured Gujala for accomplishing his sinister designs to work for his country, when she had come in contact with him during her visit to the Pakistan embassy in New Delhi for seeking visa about four months ago in February 2025.

Since then, she had been providing strategic information to him about India and receiving heavy amounts through mobile apps and UPI from him. She was also giving money to several other persons. However, the police are yet to ascertain the trails of these payments.

SSP Gagan Ajit Singh said Gujala had received Rs 30,000 from the Pakistan embassy official, also an accused in the case.

Meanwhile, DGP Gaurav Yadav said the main accused was apprehended for leaking sensitive information regarding the Indian Army movement to a Pakistan-based handler. Based on information got from the main accused, the second conduit was also identified and taken into custody.

The Malerkotla police had cracked the case days after the Amritsar (Rural) Police had arrested Falaksher Masih and Suraj Masih for their alleged involvement in leaking sensitive information and visuals of the Army Cantonment area and air bases to Pakistan’s intelligence agency.
