They had come to collect a heroin consignment near the International Border and were held when their speeding car reportedly got trapped in a field while they were trying to escape.

According to sources, some drug smugglers from the Pakistan side hurled five packets of heroin over the wired fence on Wednesday night near the Kohli border post of the Border Security Force (BSF).

The two operatives were hiding in a car to collect the packets which had fallen in a field in Chak 01-X village near the Indo-Pak border.

The BSF soldiers opened fire after seeing movement on the other side of the fence. However, the smugglers from the Pakistan side managed to escape.

After the firing by the BSF, the alarmed operatives tried to run away without collecting the packets.

The police made a blockade in the area to nab them. They were caught on their way back to Punjab near Shivpur headworks in Hindumalkot after their car hit a biker and landed in a field nearby.

The operatives tried to flee but were caught, sources said.

Buta Singh, 29, of Dharamkot in Moga and Balbir Singh alias Beera, 35, of Muthianwala in Tarn Taran, were arrested, said the police.

The Brezza car used by the accused has been impounded.
