The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Amritsar Zonal Unit, seized gold worth Rs 94 lakh from two passengers who arrived from Dubai at the Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar.
According to officials, both passengers had concealed gold ornaments inside their cargo pants. The seized jewellery included gold chains, bangles and rings. All the ornaments were confiscated under the provisions of the Customs Act.
The operation was carried out based on specific intelligence received by the DRI that some passengers arriving from Dubai were attempting to smuggle gold into India.
Acting on it, DRI officers launched a search operation at the Amritsar airport and intercepted two passengers who were found acting suspiciously. During a detailed examination, officials found gold ornaments hidden in the pockets of their cargo pants.
The gold with each passenger weighed 430.44 gm and 396.44 gm, with an estimated market value of Rs 94 lakh.
Both passengers have been detained for questioning as officials investigate further to determine whether they are part of a larger gold smuggling network.
The DRI Amritsar Zonal Unit stated that the operation is part of its continued efforts to curb gold smuggling activities through the international airport.
