The police claimed to have arrested three persons, who, along with their other accomplice, assaulted Muslim Tigers Force Chairman Adnan Ali Khan at a busy market on Wednesday.
The suspects were identified as Naim Rana alias Naim of Guru Gobind Singh Colony, Malerkotla; Shariq Rana of Bholu Wali Masjid Area; and Mohammad Adris alias DC of Mohalla Dooma Wali Gali Malerkotla. Jhok alias Samshad Rana and Sarab Rana of Patiala, along with 10-15 unknown assailants, were large.
The police had registered an FIR under Sections 115(2), 126(2), 351(1) (3), 191(3), and 190 of the BNS against the suspects along with 10-15 unknown assailants after receiving information about the assault on Wednesday.
The dispute over the uploading of allegedly offensive comments on social media towards a deceased close relative of some of the suspects by the victim, Adnan Ali Khan, was cited as the reason behind the dispute that turned bloody on the fateful day.
Khan alleged that he was attacked by around twenty persons in broad daylight, and one of his ears was chopped using a sharp-edged weapon. Accusing the police of bowing to the pressure of certain ‘Muslim Land Mafia’ Khan said he was targeted as he had been opposing the suspects who had encroached on Waqf Board property in Punjab. Fearing a threat to his life, Khan urged the government to provide him security.
DSP Gurdev Singh said cops led by SHO Malerkotla City Bhalla had initiated a probe into the sequence of events, and three suspects had been arrested from different places. “Having arrested the main suspect, we have tightened the noose around absconding suspects and their accomplice, who would soon be nabbed,” said Gurdev Singh.
