According to the police, they used to wear a khaki turban or a T-shirt with a police logo, spoke with authority and walked away with cash on one pretext or another.
Two of the accused had similar name — Kulwinder Singh.
The duo allegedly targeted traders, pocketing between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000 each time.
“They have confessed to duping at least seven shopkeepers. One of them also faces a drug case,” said Sub-Inspector Deepika Rani.
In another case, Karnail Singh of Mansa district, reportedly stepped into two shops, one in Gidderbaha and another in Balluana (in neighbouring Fazilka district), concocted stories, and asked for quick cash, promising online repayment.
