Though a relative dip was witnessed in criminal activities during the lockdown, there seems to be no let up in the attempt to smuggle in mobile phones by inmates lodged in Central Jail. As per information, 42 mobiles were recovered from prisoners in the Central Jail during the lockdown.
Three mobile phones were recovered from undertrial Gopal Chand, a resident of the city area, yesterday. Shiv Chand, Deputy Superintendent, said during the routine checking, two mobiles were recovered from the accused. “Later, another mobile and 36 intoxicating tablets were recovered from him,” he stated. During investigation, it came to the fore that two jail official (PESCO Guards) were also involved in the supply of mobile phones, Shiv Chand added.
Arvinder Singh Bhatti, Superintendent (Jail), said due to the alertness of jail officials, several recoveries of mobile phones had been made during the past four months. “We have intensified our vigil and plugged all possibilities of any objectionable and banned material to be seeped into the jail premises,” he said.
